The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest is a popular northern Wisconsin destination. Covering over one and a half million acres with 411 lakes, 632 miles of rivers and streams, 200 miles of hiking trails, 200 miles of motorized trails, over 800 wetlands, nearly 11,000 acres of wilderness areas, 50 miles of cross-country ski trails and more than 300 miles of snowmobile trails, there is something for every interest all year round. The Chequamegon Forest in the northwest and the Nicolet Forest in the northeast, under one management with the National Forest Service, have their unique characteristics and recreational opportunities. Both have interpretive centers and environmental education activities.
Northern Wisconsin is known for quaint fishing villages, logging towns and Native American communities. Enjoy the local fruit festivals, cultural events and historical museums. The heavily forested area makes excellent hunting grounds for whitetail deer, black bear, grouse, fox, coyote, rabbit, squirrel and waterfowl. The lakes, rivers and streams yield trophy-size muskie, trout, walleye, northern and panfish. The diverse landscape and plant communities are home to hundreds of bird and animal species, many indigenous to the area. Canoers and kayakers enjoy the Peshtigo, Menominee and Flambeau Rivers. The fast rapids and scenic beauty make a terrific whitewater rafting experience. If you would rather watch the water, take a look at the many waterfalls in the area. Winter activities like snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and ice skating are very popular throughout the northern Wisconsin area.
The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore has more historic lighthouses than any other coastline in the United States. The magnificent sea caves, sand beaches and rocky cliffs make a visit to these islands a memorable experience. Other interesting activities in Ashland and Bayfield Counties include boat festivals, the Great Schooner Race, and the Fall Color Car Show and Festival. Lake Superior explorers can sail on captained three-masted schooners, chartered cruisers, sea-going kayaks, canoes or one of the many sailboats available for rent. Price County is a prime hunting and fishing destination. It boasts more ruffed grouse habitat than any other place in the world, an abundance of deer and small game, and Lunker Muskies lurk in the county's many "Class A" lakes.
In summer or winter, on water or land, Northern Wisconsin has recreation activities for every age and interest. Look over the properties available for sale at Country Lakes and Farms and build your primary residence or create a vacation retreat. "Up North" welcomes you!
